Shawl Weaving Artisan - Textile Fibers and Safety
Use of fire extinguisher
Objectives : At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
• teach trainees the correct and safe way to use a fire extinguisher using the P.A.S.S. method.
Requirements
Tools/Equipment’s/Instruments
• Dummy electrical setup (no real current) - 1 No.
• CO or DCP fire extinguisher - 1 No.

• Safety gloves - 1 Set.
PROCEDURE
Demonstration (P.A.S.S. Method) (Fig 1)
• Do not aim at the flames. Fire goes away from the

base, not the top.
S - Squeeze the Handle
• Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing
agent.
• Use full hand pressure. Keep pressing until the fire is
out.
S - Sweep side to side
• Sweep the nozzle from left to right across the base
of the fire.
• Do this until fire is completely gone. Don’t stop too
soon, cover the whole fire
P - Pull the Pin Repeat practice
• Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher. Let each trainee try the 4 steps on a mock fire setup.
• This unlocks the extinguisher and gets it ready to Important safety tips
use.
• Always stand 1.5 to 2 meters away from the fire.
A - Aim the Nozzle
• Never use water on electrical or oil fires.
• Point the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire.
• If fire is too big – don’t fight. Evacuate and call help.
